June in the Houston Garden

It’s heating up in Houston!

As temperatures are on the rise in June, make sure to check your irrigation settings. For our clients with drip irrigation, we water about 25-30 minutes per day, usually starting around mid-June. If your plants look very wilted in the late afternoon and to not look like they have recovered right before dark, they probably need more water during the day. Best practice is watering once in the early morning and a second time right before dark, to give the roots time to absorb the water. Here’s why we think drip is the smartest way to water your garden.

Eggplant grows so well in Houston during the summer time. There are so many fun varieties to try in your garden! Check out Monarch Living for some ideas on what to do with all your eggplant.

The Monarch team works in gardens all over Houston Monday-Friday, every single week. We guarantee our clients’ can eat out of their gardens 52 weeks of the year! Harvest and enjoy your tomatoes this month! As it gets hotter your tomato plants may still look healthy, but the flowers will start to drop without any tomato production. It’s time to remove the plant from your garden when that happens, so you can make room for other veggies on your trellises! You can take any green tomatoes off the plant to allow them to finish ripening inside.

Consider organic mulch for your vegetable garden beds this summer. Mulch can help retain water, regulate soil temperature, and give plants a layer of protection from the extreme heat in Houston. However, you must use organic fine-chip mulch. The Monarch Team can help with mulching! We offer organic mulch bags for delivery or we can come and mulch your beds for you.

Make sure to fertilize in the summer! The more water the garden beds get during the hot months, the more we wash away vital nutrients from the soil. We love MicroLife fertilizers! They can be found on Amazon, or at local nurseries. You can get this handy backpack sprayer on Amazon!

Okra plants grow so quickly, you’ll want to check the plant daily. Almost overnight it will seem like okra goes from being too small to too large to eat! You can harvest okra at several different stages to see what you like best. Need help planting your garden for summer? The Monarch Team is here to help!

Consider planting Malabar spinach or luffa gourd in May. Be warned: both plants thrive in the summer and love to climb! They need plenty of space to spread out and can take over your garden beds without the right trellising! If you need help choosing the right trellis, the Monarch team can help!
