Beans
Beans are a favorite in the Houston garden! We plant beans the whole month of September for a fall harvest.
Bush and pole bean varieties do the best at this time. Here’s what you need to know.
Bush Beans:
Plants grow up to two feet tall and 1-2 feet wide. You can pack a lot into a small space!
No trellis required!
Mature faster than pole beans. They are usually ready to harvest within 40 to 60 days of planting.
Have a shorter production time. They only produce beans for a few weeks!
Stagger planting every 1-2 weeks for a more steady harvest for a few months.
Can be disease-prone. Bush beans can be susceptible to a wide variety of plant diseases (especially in our humid climate).

Pole Beans:
Plants grow up to 12 feet!
Require trellises or other support. An arch offers a lot of room for pole beans or an obelisk will work as long as it’s at least 7’ tall
Take longer to mature than bush beans.
Produce longer than bush beans (you can harvest these for months - until it freezes in Houston).
Are more disease-resistant. Pole beans are hardier than bush beans, and far less disease prone.
These are a little more of a gamble in the fall because they take longer to produce (and we are racing against an unknown freeze date). If you have the room and trellis space - plant them! I always do. Some years, if it freezes early, I don’t get as many - but there have been years I’ve gotten a ton during winters when it doesn’t freeze until mid or late January.
