May in the Houston Garden

It’s heating up in Houston!

As the temperature rises, winter flowers will start to die. May is a great time to add more summer flowers into your gardens and landscape! Some of our favorite summer flowers are vinca, gomphrena, pentas, and zinnias!

Now is also the time to check your irrigation settings. May starts to really heat up here in Houston. For our clients with drip irrigation, we water for 20 minutes a day starting around mid-May. Here’s why we think drip is the smartest way to water your garden.

SHOP our 2024 Planting Calendar! Find the exact planting dates our team uses to keep our clients’ gardens thriving in Houston (Zone 9) year-round. Gardening is our full-time job. The Monarch team works in gardens all over Houston Monday-Friday, every single week. We guarantee our clients’ can eat out of their gardens 52 weeks of the year! When you make a promise like that one, it’s important to have a solid planting plan. We pass all of our knowledge on to you in our planting calendar!

Make sure you are helping your tomato, cucumber, and other climbing plants up the trellis! Especially tomatoes as they are not natural climbers and need lots of air flow to prevent disease! Need help caring for your garden this summer? We’ll be right over!

Wondering what to do with all your ripening tomatoes? We have a bunch of recipes for your tomatoes on Monarch Living’s Recipes.

Maya Obelisk

Vertical growing space is important for many vegetables. In spring, we grow cucumbers, tomatoes, and beans on trellises. Need more trellis space so you can grow all of these (or maybe several varieties of them!)? Check out Monarch’s trellis options on our shop! Not only are they durable and fantastic for growing your tomatoes, they are a beautiful addition to your garden and landscape!

The pictured Maya Trellis is collapsible and easy to store in seasons you may not need extra vertical space. It also makes a great stake for you peppers and eggplants when they get large and begin to lean!

In order to get 3 cucumber harvests a year, you have a short window in May to plant your summer cucumbers. Don’t miss out! Check out Monarch Living Recipes for inspiration on using your spring cucumber harvest!

Consider planting Malabar spinach or luffa gourd in May. Be warned: both plants thrive in the summer and love to climb! They need plenty of space to spread out and can take over your garden beds without the right trellising! If you need help choosing the right trellis, the Monarch team can help!

Okra grows wonderfully in Houston’s hot summers! One plant can produce a lot of okra, harvest it at different sizes to see what you like best! Need to get plants to add to your garden this summer? Check out our plant order form and get your plants and compost delivered straight to your door!

Consider organic mulch for your vegetable garden beds this summer. Mulch can help retain water, regulate soil temperature, and give plants a layer of protection from the extreme heat in Houston. However, you must use organic fine-chip mulch. If you need organic mulch for your beds, The Monarch Team will be right over!

FREE! Download our Monthly Tasks and Tips for the garden and landscaping. We’ll keep you on track throughout the year. You’ll know when it’s time to add compost, what flowers are in season, when to plant bulbs, when to mulch, and so much more.
