March in the Houston Garden

Spring is here in the Houston garden, friends! This is a wonderful time of year in the garden. Not too cold or hot to be outside!

We are filling the garden with more spring favorites including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans, eggplant, melons, and more!

As a bonus, all the winter veggies we love so much like kale, lettuces, Swiss Chard, snap peas, beets, radishes, collards greens, mustard greens, dill, parsley, thyme, oregano, and chives are still in the garden for us to enjoy until they can’t beat the heat!

Tomatoes are a favorite among many gardeners! We have a few more weeks to plant these to ensure a successful harvest before the heat sets in. Make sure to download our Spring Tomato Guide for tips!

March is a fantastic time to plant your peppers! Download our Pepper Guide for tips and some of our favorite varieties to grow! There are so many cool peppers you can grow that you won’t find in a grocery store!

SHOP our 2024 Planting Calendar! Find the exact planting dates our team uses to keep our clients’ gardens thriving in Houston (Zone 9) year-round. Gardening is our full-time job. The Monarch team works in gardens all over Houston Monday-Friday, every single week. We guarantee our clients’ can eat out of their gardens 52 weeks of the year! When you make a promise like that one, it’s important to have a solid planting plan. We pass all of our knowledge on to you in our planting calendar!

Dino Kale Plant

Kale can grow year-round in Houston, but only if it’s started in the winter months. The first few weeks of March is our last opportunity to pack in the kale plants. There are several fun varieties to try, but here’s a secret: curly kale consistently stands up to our Houston summers. If you aren’t sure what to do with all the kale growing in your garden, try this kale salad! It is so delicious, even people that don’t care for kale will go back for seconds.

Basil

Basil is back! In March, we can finally start planting basil again. A beloved herb that will grow through Houston’s hot summers. Have you seen our recipes using basil on Monarch Living’s Recipes?

Maya Obelisk

Vertical growing space is important for many vegetables. In spring, we grow cucumbers, tomatoes, and beans on trellises. Need more trellis space so you can grow all of these (or maybe several varieties of them!)? Check out Monarch’s trellis options on our shop! Not only are they durable and fantastic for growing your tomatoes, they are a beautiful addition to your garden and landscape!

The pictured Maya Trellis is collapsible and easy to store in seasons you may not need extra vertical space. It also makes a great stake for you peppers and eggplants when they get large and begin to lean!

Need help getting your garden ready for spring? Now is the time! We offer garden maintenance that can give your garden the boost it needs for a successful spring!
