February in the Houston Garden

Even though it’s February in Houston, it will finally start to feel like Spring! By mid-February, we are no longer afraid of freezing temps. We start filling the garden with spring favorites like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. As a bonus, all the winter veggies we love so much like kale, lettuces, Swiss Chard, snap peas, beets, radishes, collards greens, mustard greens, dill, parsley, thyme, oregano, and chives are still thriving!

Swiss chard is a show stopper in February, and throughout the spring. It brings so many fun colors into the garden. A delicious and nutritious addition to smoothies and salads! We also love Martha Stewart’s Swiss chard lasagna.

Nasturtiums are such a fun flower to grow in the Houston garden! You can plant them by seed now. They are edible! Switch up using basil or arugula on your pizza for nasturtium leaves!

SHOP our 2024 Planting Calendar! Find the exact planting dates our team uses to keep our clients’ gardens thriving in Houston year-round. Gardening is our full-time job. The Monarch team works in gardens all over Houston Monday-Friday, every single week. We guarantee our clients’ can eat out of their gardens 52 weeks of the year! When you make a promise like that one, it’s important to have a solid planting plan. We pass all of our knowledge on to you in our planting calendar!

Kale can grow year-round in Houston, but only if it’s started in the winter months. Now is the time to pack in the kale plants. There are several fun varieties to try, but here’s a secret: curly kale consistently stands up to our Houston summers. If you aren’t sure what to do with all the kale growing in your garden, try this kale salad! It is so delicious, even people that don’t care for kale will go back for seconds.

Rosemary is a beautiful and hearty herb to grow! We all love the taste of it in our meals, but it also makes a wonderful garnish and table decor! Also, rosemary is wonderful for hair growth, and you can make your own rosemary water to spray in your hair!
