Shocker: There are Four Seasons in Houston

Houston has four seasons? Hot. Hotter. Hottest. And freezing?

Pretty much, but we call them spring, summer, fall, and winter.

As crazy as our weather feels, we truly have four distinct growing seasons in our city. This means four times a year we are able to grow entirely new types of vegetables and fruits.

While most of our herbs and pollinator plants remain in our beds year-round or at least long portions of the year, spring, summer, fall, and winter offer unique opportunities to grow seasonal foods!

What we plant in spring (March-May)

Cucumber, squash, zucchini, melons, arugula, mustard, kale, eggplant, tomato, tomatillo, hot peppers, sweet peppers, basil, mint, rosemary, oregano, thyme, beans, lemongrass, garlic, chives, and swiss chard.

What we plant in summer (June-August)

Okra, luffa, squash, melons, eggplant, jalapeno peppers, basil, mint, rosemary, malabar spinach, lima beans, long beans, cow peas, garlic, chives, sweet potato

What we plant in fall (September - November)

Cucumber, squash, zucchini, melons, arugula, mustard, kale, eggplant, tomato, hot peppers, sweet peppers, basil, mint, dill, cilantro, rosemary, oregano, thyme, beans, corn, lemongrass, garlic, chives, swiss chard.

What we plant in winter (December-February)

Kale, mustards, collards, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, arugula, potatoes, lettuces, carrot, celery, parsley, dill, cilantro, spinach, swiss chard, beets, sugar snap peas, garlic, and onion.
