Broccoli in the Houston Garden

As we all know, the climate in Houston can be both a blessing and a challenge. With hot summers and mild winters, growing vegetables like broccoli requires a bit of planning. Fortunately, with the right techniques, you can cultivate this nutritious superfood organically right in your backyard. Here’s how to get started!

Broccoli is not only packed with vitamins and minerals, but it's also versatile in the kitchen. Whether you enjoy it steamed, roasted, or raw in salads, this cruciferous vegetable is a must-have in any organic garden. Plus, it's relatively easy to grow, making it perfect for both novice and experienced gardeners.  Also - it has very few natural pests.  Score!

In Houston, broccoli thrives in cooler weather.  We start planting broccoli in early-mid October once temps have dropped out of the 90’s.  We only plant transplants in our clients’ gardens.  Planting by seed indoors under grow lights is possible, but direct-sowing seeds into a garden bed is pretty much impossible in Houston.  It’s too hot when the seeds need to get started - they usually will not germinate if you plant them in late-August or September when the seeds would need to get planted outdoors.

Timing your planting correctly is crucial to avoid the heat of the summer, which can hinder the growth of your broccoli.  Get your plants in by the end of October if at all possible!
